Somebody once asked me, "Why are you killing yourself doing all the work without any help from those around you? There are cad-operators sitting here who would like to do some of your work, and engineers who could be assigned to carry some of your load. Why do you insist on doing everything on your own?" My answer was, "I am not killing myself working here, not at all, this is just the way I do my work. Furthermore, if the job would get done better & faster by getting others into the act I would gladly share my job assignments and become more of a supervisor."
I really enjoy being busy all the time, and I know what it takes to have the final product come out right, just the way I had envisioned it from the start. There is no need to explain concepts or waste time on making sure that instructions are being followed through, neither will it be necessary to mark up and correct drawings, which can be a time consuming process of repeated improvements until documents are finally acceptable.
For air-separation plant projects which I work on quite often, I typically spend no more than 20 to 30-hours on a full-size drawing (34"x 22") which besides doing the actual drafting also includes calculations and occasionally checking of shop drawings. This involves cold-boxes and their foundations, compressor foundations with dynamic analyses (elevated table top types may take a little longer), tank foundations, pipe racks, platforms & ladders. This kind of a performance can only be achieved by having one competent and motivated man do all the work without being slowed down by such tasks as supervising others, attending meetings or having to justify design methods and prepare presentations explaining the work, or get others involved interfacing with various disciplines and departments.
